چکیده

This paper examines how the density and governance of vertically related populations affects the life chances of organizations. We integrate the literatures on organizational ecology and vertical integration to develop a theory of how 1) specialized upstream industries affect downstream survival rates 2) the prevalence of different governance forms among upstream and downstream organizations moderates this relationship, and 3) different forms of governance exert differential competitive pressures on focal organizations. We find evidence supporting our hypotheses in an empirical examination of the downstream laser printer industry and upstream laser engine industry. * We are grateful to Glenn Carroll, Olav Sorenson, Oliver Williamson, and seminar audiences at Columbia University, New York University, Universite de Paris I, as well as participants at the Conference on Resource Partitioning and Organizational Dynamics, for insightful comments on previous drafts of this paper.

Multimarket Contact in Vertically Related Markets

We analyze collusion in two comparable market structures. In the first market structure only one firm is vertically integrated; there is one more independent firm in the upstream industry and another independent firm in the downstream industry. In the second market structure, there are only two vertically integrated firms that can trade among themselves in the intermediate good market. The seco...

The long term evolution of vertically-related industries*

The paper develops the argument that the long-term structural evolution of an industry depends on the evolution of a vertically-related, downstream industry. We analyse two pairs of vertically-related industries, the jet and turboprop aircraft and engine industries, since the first introduction of the jet and turboprop technologies to 1998. The paper shows that the evolutionary dynamics of the ...

Evolution on the shoulders of giants: entrepreneurship and firm survival in the German laser industry

This paper studies 40 years of evolution in the German laser industry to test the generality of evolutionary patterns observed in the U.S. laser industry. Key characteristics found in the U.S. industry are also present in Germany. There is sustained entry into the industry, and neither a shakeout nor first-mover advantages of early entrants are observed. A survival analysis finds that, similar ...

How Capability Differences, Transaction Costs

This paper provides an integrative analysis of the drivers of vertical scope, and formalizes theory on capability-driven integration, focusing on the following questions: (1) How does the distribution of individual firm capabilities along a value chain affect vertical scope? (2) How do transaction costs interact with capability distributions in vertically linked segments to determine scope at t...
